FREDERICK, Md. — The visiting University of Mary Washington Eagles (3-1, 1-1 CAC) overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to upend the Hood College men's basketball team (4-3, 1-1 CAC) 65-61 Saturday at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.

UMW drained a pair of three-pointers in the first 1:36 and never trailed in the first half. The Eagle lead grew to as much as 10 with just under four minutes to go after a conventional three-point play by Justin Baker. The Blazers closed to within four in the final 30 seconds but Baker hit 1-of-2 from the foul line to make it a five-point game at the break.

Hood managed to grab the lead for the first time in the contest at the 16:50 mark on a Mark McGlone triple to make it 38-36. This time it was the Blazers who stretched the advantage to double figures when Tim Abercrombie drilled a trey to give Hood a 54-44 lead with just under eight minutes to play.

But the Eagles wouldn't go away and gradually chipped away at the lead. Baker regained the lead for UMW with his only three-point basket of the game with 1:32 remaining. The Eagles would not trail again as Jon Pierce clinched the victory by sinking 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 17 seconds.

The Eagles held Hood's leading scorer Jesse Gutekunst without a field goal attempt in the second half which prevented the 6-8 center from notching his seventh straight double-double of the season. Gutekunst finished with seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior Ryan Junghans led all scorers with 22 points and McGlone finished with 14.

Baker registered a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the victors.

Hood returns to action Thursday hosting Gallaudet University at 8 p.m. at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
